The competitive edge has shifted to what happens with the data the automated press produces, and on offset that story runs straight through color.

Pressroom automation is table stakes, color control is the differentiator

The GelatoConnect State of Intelligent Print Production 2026, based on a global survey of print service providers in early 2026, found that nearly 80 percent have automated part of their workflow, 78 percent feel they must modernize within a year, and only around 9 percent consider their production highly optimized. In other words, most shops have bought automation, but few have closed the last gap between automated and optimized. On an offset press, that gap is color correction.

What is already automated on a modern offset press

A well specified sheetfed press in 2026 already automates most of the mechanical makeready:

  • Fully automatic plate changing, often all plates in a few minutes.
  • CIP3 and CIP4 ink presetting that loads ink zone values straight from prepress.
  • Simultaneous roller and blanket washing while the press is otherwise busy.
  • Inline inspection cameras that flag defects and register sheet by sheet.
  • Logistics and job changeover handled by the press control system.

What most of this does not do is decide, on its own, that the cyan has drifted two DeltaE and pull it back. Inline inspection can see a problem; presetting can start close to target. The last manual loop is color

Closed loop color control is the automation of that final loop. A spectral measurement system reads the color bar on every sheet or at set intervals, compares each zone to the agreed reference, and sends corrections back to the ink keys automatically. Measurement hardware such as IntelliTrax2 or an inline scanner feeds the loop; the ColorLoop engine turns those readings into ink zone moves and keeps a time stamped record of every one. Closed loop color control automates the color correction decision specifically, measuring each sheet and driving the ink keys back to the reference. They are complementary. Most presses in 2026 have strong mechanical automation and still leave the color loop partly manual, which is exactly the gap closed loop fills.

Does automation reduce makeready waste on its own?

Partly. Automatic plate changing and CIP3 or CIP4 presetting cut setup time and get the press close to target quickly.
